An Interview With... Outpost 3

11/01/2021

All you need to know about the chaotic grunge come indie rock of Worthing's Outpost 3.

Here at Middle Eight, we're keen to showcase up and coming artists who are working hard to make themselves heard.

We recently spoke to Outpost 3, the collective work Dan, Will, and Roy, who incorporate their love of film soundtracks, sci-fi, and experimental music to create heavily varied indie rock.

The band were kind enough to share unreleased single 'Pinwheel World' with us at Middle Eight and we were immediately hooked with their innovation and aggression. It's a guitar driven track that delivers tuneful instrumental coupled with sprechgesang style vocals.

Find out more about Outpost 3 below.

"Pinwheel World" single will be released on February 1st

Who are you and where are you based?

We are Dan, Will and Roy and are the permanent residents of Outpost 3 and when we're not frequenting the outer reaches of space with our science experiments, you can find us in Worthing on the South Coast of England.

How would you describe the music you make?

Post-ironic Indie? Experimental Garage? A sonic boom of universal chaos? Sometimes partially improvised and sometimes much more tightly structured.

It's very much a hybrid of our individual influences. It can range from Cosmic Horror Grunge to Experimental Electronica and back round to straight up Indie Rock.

We're trying to get that sweet spot between the rawness and fluidity of our live gigs and the textures of a wide variety of instruments, using synth and samples alongside guitar, bass and drums.

All of us are into bands where their individual songs vary in style, but you can always tell it's them.

How did you first get into music?

Roy: "He-Man the movie, the fight scene in the music shop. Purple Haze was playing, I was 12 and it blew my mind."

Dan and Roy are Brothers, both lucky enough to grow up in a house full of music.

Dan: "My parents would be listening to something in the kitchen and then my brothers and sister would be listening to what they were into in their bedrooms"

Will: "Like Dan and Roy, I was spawned into a musical household, but later became obsessed with movie soundtracks, experimental rock, industrial and prog so I began dabbling in guitar, tape experiments and digital recording."

Who are your main musical influences?

Dan: I would have to say it was bands and artists like Ride, Primal Scream, Sonic Youth. Sebadoh, David Bowie, Hendrix.

Will: Deftones, The Fall, The Mars Volta, Squarepusher, Coil, Steeleye Span.

Roy: Ride, MBV, The Stooges, Spiritualized, Chemical Brothers, The Doors, Mudhoney, Bonzo (John Bonham)

All: Smashing Pumpkins, movie soundtracks, Sci-fi/B-movie culture in general.

Which artist do you currently have on repeat?

Dan: Can't get enough of Beak> and their most recent release. Others would be Metz, Alvvays, Bad Bad Not Good,

Will: I've recently been listening to VHS Head, Andy Stott, and Human Impact quite a bit. and also a lot of the new stuff from Ipecac Records.

Roy: The Chats, Metz, Trail of Dead

What are your plans for the future?

Currently Dan is adding the finishing touches to the music vid for our new single Pinwheel World, which is coming out on February 1st on all major streaming platforms. This will be followed by a new mini 7 track album titled "The Last Advert EP" to be released February 20th.

During the last year of lockdowns, we've been writing quite a few songs and we are just desperate to get back to playing live to get back to rehearsing them in a live setting. So, fingers crossed there will be a full-length album coming as soon we get a chance to record again.

Since 2014 we've been running a regular Live music event called "Calm Fest." which has been raising money for "Campaign Against Living Miserably" a men's mental health charity aiming to reduce suicide in the male population.

Calm Fest 4 is set for 29th May at Bar 42 in Worthing.

Outpost 3 are creating something totally original that draws on a number of influences. Their sound is rare and their enthusiasm even more so! Keep up to date with the trio via their Instagram and Facebook and check out their music on Bandcamp.
