Introducing - Michael Vickers

13/01/2021

Putting the spotlight on lesser-known artists, so you can jump on the bandwagon before everyone else! This week Leicester singer/songwriter Michael Vickers!

Hailing from Leicester, Michael Vickers is a singer / songwriter who through the means of his guitar and piano, formulates honest indie alternative tunes brimming with heartfelt lyricism and defiance.

With releases dating all the way back to 2013, Michael has demonstrated his persistence, and is finally beginning to garner the recognition he deserves.

Speaking to the BBC, Michael states his songs are often reflective of his own life and background, from troubles with drinking to relationship issues, but have recognisable themes which anyone can relate to, as seen in his piano driven ballad 'I'll Be There'.

With influences varying from Elliot Smith to The 1975 and The Beatles to Radiohead, Michael's music has depth and range. 'Dead and Buried' shows a different side to the self-taught musician, who describes the tune as an "angry song", and there is a fast-paced funkiness that isn't present in the slower aforementioned tune.

Slow builder 'You're Not Around Anymore' is another forceful, emotional track delivered through Michael's raw vocals and subtle acoustic guitar.

These are three of the songs that feature on Michael's 2020 EP Poetic Nonsense, a release that has seen him garner attention from the likes of the BBC and more.

Vickers is constantly adding feathers to his cap. He describes his biggest musical achievement as his Glastonbury appearance back in 2015, but he hasn't stopped there. He was in the top twenty most listened to BBC Introducing acts for the East Midlands in 2019 and 2020, and performed at the de Montfort hall gardens festival the very same year.

Michael Vickers is an artist with versatility and clearly evident songwriting capabilities. However, more importantly, he is real. His music draws inspiration from everyday life and the emotion on display is blatantly genuine.
